Prologue: The summoner is mad about the story the friar told so he asks to tell his tale. He says how friars are no different than fiends and an angel took a friar down to hell. The friar noticed that there were no friars in hell. The angel asks Satan to lift up his tail to show the friar where the friars are in hell. Twenty thousand friars came out of Satans ass whole then went right back up it.
Story: There is this friar who is a begger as well. He would preach for his own benefits, taking money from the people. The friar interjects calling the summoner a liar. The friar visits a dying man named Thomas and begs him for money. Thomas explains that he has spent most of his money on other friars that have said that they will pray for them. This friar then goes on a rampage saying that the reason that Thomas isn't getting better is because he has split of his praises among many other convents. The friar say that Thomas should just pay him for praises because a united prayer for his health is stronger than a divided one. Thomas also becomes enraged saying that he has no money left to pay the friar. Then Thomas gives in and says that he holds a secret hiding place for his possessions underneath his butt. Thomas tells the friar to place his hands under his butt and Thomas farts on it telling the friar to split that up among his convent. The friar flips out and goes to a lords house and describes to him the events that had just taken place. The lord (obviously brainwashed by the friar and his deceptive ways) agrees with the friar and thinks that he may be possessed by the devil (because of the statement about splitting the fart) and wished Thomas the worst of luck. Then a meat carver (a servant) standing by interjects and explains how the friar could split up a fart among the convent with a simple wagon wheel...
Summoner: Is a person who stands up against people who abuse the church powers. He is a drunk who is manipulative in his story by making all friars look bad. He thinks he knows everything but in many cases his simple judgement of others is wrong. Chaucer does not like this character because of his lack of respect. EVERYMAN
Friar: Rather festive fellow who seems to be courteous, but in reality his courtesy is for person gain. He cons the people into giving him money by telling them all this heavenly b.s. Chaucer doesnt like him because he is a begger and a seducer. CHURCH
Thomas: Thomas is a sickly man who is now bedridden and has little to do, other then sit around miserable all day, and neglects his wife. He believes some of what the friars speaks and is willing to pay them. When he tells the friar that he has no money to give he sees the friar for what he really is. He sees the scam the he is running and is outraged. He then plays a minor trick (actually extremely disgusting and embarassing) on the friar. Everyman (farmer)
Wife: Thomas' wife is upset because her husband isn't sexually active with her anymore and tells the friar to amend that while he is talking to her husband.
Lord: The lord in the summoners story is completey brainwashed and has (literally) bought into the friars scam. He originally completely agrees with the friar then when he is shown simple logic by his servant he changes his accusation, saying that Thomas wasn't crazy in telling the friar to split a fart up between the other friars in his covenent. The lord is stupid. Everyman (rich)
Meat Carver: He explains how to split up a fart with a wagon wheel and is rewarded with cloth to make a suit.
